When living in California, I went camping in Sequoia(sounds like: say-coy-ya) National Park. Actually it was me and a friend. While there, we hiked up to a place called “Dome Rock”. It was a beautiful 360 degree view of the vast park with the massive trees.

The view was ridiculous! I felt like I could see everything, I guess because I really could! Well, faith for sure is just like the vantage point you get from a high peak. What you believe shapes exactly how you see in life. Allow me to say that in a different way(for different folk). Your mental topography of how life is, and how you should interact in it, is based on what you believe.

What DO you believe? That’s a question you will have to figure out as you walk through athletics and life. Whether you are a religious person or not.

For the Christian athlete, there is ONE foundational, UNSHAKABLE understanding that you MUST stand on and look from. Attached to believing in Christ is this understanding:

“YOU ARE A SON or DAUGHTER OF GOD BECAUSE HE SAID SO, NOT BECAUSE YOU or others SEE A PHYSICAL CHANGE IN YOU!”

I know sometimes we struggle to “prove” we are “a child of God”. But we should have that truth settled in your heart first. The Bible says that others will know that you are a child of God by your actions. God on the other hand knows and accepts you through Christ. Settle that!

It is from that vantage point of a settled child of God that you should view athletics, life, and the world. Now…What do you see? (about yourself, others, society). What are you doing or going to do about what you see? It is from that question that your action is born.

The anxiety of performing for others as if they are the gatekeepers to God’s acceptance, must be removed. This stress can hinder anyone from performing well in their sport and life. Rest on the peak of this understanding, ‘For therein is the righteousness of GOD revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith.’ Romans 1:17

What understanding are you standing on to view life?   How DOES a child of GOD see things?

Mile 137: Who am I to say THIS about Cancel Culture! iS IT TRUE?

This new space in our culture called “cancel culture” where any person who disagrees with the growing popular perspective or have made a misstep verbally or behaviorally, whether in the present or in the past, can be cancelled (i.e. have economic means negatively impacted) is the epitome of a self-defeating movement. But…. This is not […]

Mile 137: (Question 3) Dealing with the rising emotions from the murder of George Floyd: a performance psychology strategy perspective.

I never thought that this process would have opened up the amount of deep conversations I’ve had with friends and colleagues because of what they’ve read in these posts. I appreciated every connection. Before I get into answering my final question in my process, I want to mention how inadequate what I’ve said and am […]

Mile 137: (Question 2) Dealing with the rising emotions from the murder of George Floyd: a performance psychology strategy perspective.

I have meditated on part 1 of my performance psychology strategy of analyzing my internal world because of our current cultural climate for a few days now. I’ve gotten to speak with some friends, pastors and business folk about their pov and listened to some podcasts. I’m trying to get different vantage points so I […]
