I’ve always loved storytelling because of the potential hidden truths you can find in them. I found two stories from the author Eileen K. Van Kavelaar that I want to share with you. One I will share in this post and the other one, next week. And hopefully you enjoy them!

The Farmer & His Sons:

A rich old farmer who was dying said, “Time to reveal the family secret. Somewhere on our land is a hidden treasure. I don’t know exactly where it is buried, but I have no doubt that it is there. You must  under no circumstances sell our land. Give me your word that you will turn over every inch of ground until you find the treasure.”

The sons, granted their father his last request. The day after he was buried, they began digging in search of the treasure. Not one inch was left unturned. As thorough as their search had been, they never found any hidden gold or jewels. But at harvest time their farm, with its earth so thoroughly worked, reaped the highest profit in the village. They then realized that the treasure their father had referred to was a bountiful harvest. In their industry, they found the treasure.

If the land were your mind in the sport that you play or coach, have you taken the time to dig deep and leave no place unturned looking for the treasure of peak skill – a treasure valued for competition?

I promise you all people who are diligent will reap the reward when the harvest season approaches. What you sow you will reap.

Proverbs 22:29 says, “See you a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before obscure men.”

“Seest thou a man diligent in his business?…. In the business of his calling, be it what it will, whether for himself or his master; constant in it, swift, ready, and expeditious at it; who industriously pursues it, cheerfully attends it, makes quick dispatch of it; does it off of hand, at once, and is not slothful in it, nor weary of it; when you have observed and taken notice of such a man, which is not very common, you may, without a spirit of prophecy, foresee that such a man will rise in the world….” – Gills Exposition

A good Biblical example would be the story of Joseph. And he was industrious in a less than happy circumstance. He found out that all the rewards of diligence are hidden from the eyes of the one being industrious…just like planting a seed. Just have faith and patience.

How diligent are you at your work?
